What does design mean to you?

Design is about problem- solving and enhancing experience. At Mstudio, we believe every space has its own unique life and needs. Design isnt just about beautifying environments, its about responding to how people actually live through thoughtful planning, turning limitations into features. Our “innovative light renovation” concept is exactly this philosophy in action. We aim to optimise spatial function and flow with the most precise, seamless interventions possible, creating scenes that are both beautiful and highly practical. Ultimately, design means forging a deeper, more comfortable connection between space and people.

What was your proudest project in 2025?

What really energised our entire team this year was winning MERIT winner in the Apartment category at the Home Journal Awards 2025 for our North Point Kwong Chiu Terrace two-bedroom unit. For a young but rapidly growing studio like Mstudio, this recognition means the world. This project exemplifies handling typical Hong Kong old building challenges, numerous beams and low ceilings of only about 8 feet. Our strategy focused on “precisely elevating the ritual of daily living” rather than drastically changing partitions.

The most distinctive element is the entrance. We extended the original 2.2-meter corridor to 3.8 meters, integrating a shoe cabinet, changing bench, and built-in garment care machine for the couples outdoor clothing needs. To avoid visual clutter, we wrapped bulky elements in white finishes and accented with light wood shelving and pale blue marble-patterned flooring. For the low beams, we rejected space-compressing false ceilings, instead wrapping them in wood veneer with embedded soft lighting along the edges. This transformed a structural flaw into a sculptural light feature. The project proves that through careful observation and “light renovation” techniques, even common old apartments can become award-winning homes.

How do you keep your creativity alive?

Maintaining creative vitality comes down to “systematic input” and “continuous team dialogue.” But for a studio like Mstudio thats grown from a few people to over ten, the more important source of energy is our internal collaborative culture. We regularly hold cross-project sharing sessions where we dont just discuss technical challenges, but also exchange ideas about new materials, new craftsmanship, and even inspiration from philosophy and the arts. Creative vitality never comes from working in isolation—it comes from continuously absorbing external nourishment and, within a trusted team, transforming that nourishment into superior solutions.
