What is the core philosophy behind your firm?

IDesignerLab is a Singapore-based studio guided by our motto, ‘Designing Tomorrow, Today’. To me, this means creating homes thoughtfully tailored not only for our clients’ present needs but for how their lifestyles may evolve in the years ahead.

Rather than pursuing fleeting trends, we focus on delivering timeless spaces that remain relevant and meaningful. Every project begins with listening deeply to our clients. Because good design is highly personal, our role is to transform those stories into environments that feel authentic and beautifully crafted. We see ourselves as long-term partners, guiding homeowners through every stage of the journey—from concept to completion—with transparency, care, and a commitment to excellence.

What is the most magical moment in the process of bringing a design to life?

It is when homeowners step into their finished space for the very first time. After months of discussions and construction, seeing their expressions, whether excitement, relief, or tears of joy, is incredibly rewarding.

One memory that has stayed with me happened years ago when clients surprised everyone on handover day by bringing a cake to celebrate the home’s ‘birth’. Rather than simply collecting keys, they treated it as the beginning of a new chapter. That simple gesture profoundly changed how I view my profession, reminding me that our work becomes the backdrop to family milestones and quiet, shared moments. When everything comes together and the space simply feels right, witnessing that joy is without question the best part of the journey.

How do you balance aesthetics with genuinely improving how people live and work?

I have never seen aesthetics and functionality as competing priorities; if a space looks impressive but is inconvenient to use, it isn’t truly successful. Every project begins by asking about and understanding our clients’ daily routines, habits, and small frustrations. These conversations form the foundation of all decisions.

Once functionality is thoughtfully resolved, aesthetics become the layer that gives the space its character. When you no longer have to think about how a space functions because everything simply works, aesthetics and functionality become one.

What core design principles do you believe will create spaces that stand the test of time?

Timeless design is not about creating a space that never ages; it is about creating one that evolves gracefully with its inhabitants. My first principle is putting people first, as building around true lifestyles naturally ensures greater longevity. Second, I design with purpose. Every feature must serve a clear function, ensuring that intentional decisions keep the home practical.

Third, I practice restraint. Instead of filling a room with excessive decorative elements, I focus on proportion, texture, and refined detailing, allowing the architecture and the people to take centre stage. Finally, flexibility is essential. A home must adapt as families grow and lifestyles shift. By anticipating future needs, we create spaces that serve their owners well beyond moving day.
