Driven by a passion for space planning from a young age, Nicky has never stopped exploring how design can influence the way people feel and live. In this interview, he shares his design journey and how he adapts to evolving client needs.
Can you share the story and core focus behind your firm?
Established in 2000, Rezt+Relax Interior Design specializes in residential homes, landed rebuilds, and A&A works. We have completed over 20,000 homes across Singapore, ranging from HDB flats to luxury landed properties.
Beyond visual appeal, we focus on practical solutions for everyday living. Our commitment to transparency and after-sales service has helped us build a strong base of repeat clients and referrals over the years.
With over two decades in the industry, what continues to drive your passion for design?
I have now been in the industry for more than 25 years and have worked on over 1,500 residential projects. What keeps me motivated is seeing homeowners genuinely happy with the spaces we create. I still remember the first time a client told me, “This is exactly the home we dreamed of!” That was the defining moment when I realised design is something I truly want to dedicate my life to.
How has your design philosophy evolved to meet the changing needs of modern homeowners?
In the past, clients focused mainly on aesthetics. Today, there is a much stronger emphasis on functionality, comfort, and how adaptable a space can be over time. This has significantly reshaped my approach; I now spend much more time understanding how clients live daily before proposing any design direction.
Good design isnt just about beauty—it must reflect the homeowner’s habits and emotional connection to space. My style has evolved toward modern practicality combined with natural warmth, creating calm homes that are easy to live in.
Which city inspires you the most?
Milan. I admire how Italian design balances sophistication with simplicity, creating spaces that feel timeless yet highly liveable. There is a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, materiality, and proportion. What resonates with me most is the ability to create warmth and elegance at the same time. The use of natural textures and refined detailing aligns closely with my own philosophy: creating homes that are not only visually beautiful, but also emotionally inviting.
Looking ahead, what new directions are you hoping to take in your projects?
I’m looking forward to exploring projects that combine luxury living with practical spatial planning, especially for intergenerational families. I am also increasingly interested in incorporating sustainable materials into residential design without compromising aesthetics.
Ultimately, I hope to continue designing spaces that homeowners truly connect with emotionally—homes that look good on the first day, and still feel enjoyable and relevant many years later.
