Now in its 12th edition, the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong, known for championing accessible contemporary art, brings together 99 local and international exhibitors. Among the emerging names to watch, here are five young artists whose works promise to stand out.
This year, the Affordable Art Fair continues under the theme “Dare to Collect”, running from 22–25 May 2025 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The fair seeks to inspire art lovers of all backgrounds, encouraging them to explore and collect with confidence. From evocative paintings and innovative sculptures to experimental installations, the fair celebrates creative diversity and invites new collectors to take their first step towards building a personal art collection.
1. Angel Hui
Hong Kong artist Angel Hui captures the city’s unique cultural essence through ceramics in her project Giu Jie’s Store. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Hui steps into the role of a local shopkeeper to showcase the energy and character of neighbourhood life. The store becomes a reflection of community spirit—efficient, lively and full of heart—while her signature blue-and-white porcelain pieces reinterpret the traditional “store” concept as a sensory journey through memory and modernity.
2. Li Shudan
Mainland Chinese artist Li Shudan reimagines a bustling fruit market as a metaphorical landscape in Fruit Stall, featuring over 365 hand-carved wooden apples and a surprise fruit sculpture to be unveiled at the fair. This intricate installation blurs the line between reality and illusion, prompting viewers to question what they see and discover symbolic meaning within each carved form. Visitors are invited to engage with the installation—selecting their own “fruit” much like at a Hong Kong market, with two sculpted fruits priced at HKD 1,000.
3. The Tiny Smile（TTS）
Born in Hong Kong and raised in London, The Tiny Smile (TTS) creates immersive installations centred on joy and interaction. Inspired by her paintings, her vibrant spaces combine bright colours and rhythmic patterns to evoke both meditation and delight. At their centre is a moon gate, a traditional Chinese symbol of harmony and luck, anchoring her Moon Smile series. Another feature, Hundred Laughs, suspends 100 whimsical icons such as “up-down hahaha” and the Chinese character for “smile”, blending cultural motifs with contemporary art to create an atmosphere of reflection, play and connection.
4. Jackie Case
With characteristic wit, Jackie Case presents the Art Transfer Matrix (ATM)—an installation disguised as a functional cash machine, inviting audiences to reflect on the relationship between creativity and commerce in artmaking. The work playfully critiques the commercial side of the art world while offering a hands-on experience: visitors can purchase a live, hand-drawn sketch by the artist for HKD 300.
5. Pen So
Hong Kong illustrator Pen So brings a touch of whimsy to the fair’s café through his enchanting series Wandering Hong Kong, which celebrates the spirit of the city’s neighbourhoods. Visitors can relax amid immersive works such as Drifting in Space and Ocean Metropolis, where surreal imagery transforms familiar local icons, foods and streetscapes into dreamlike reinterpretations, inviting a fresh appreciation of Hong Kong’s culture and identity.
