From now until 11 December, you can experience an Italian-influenced hutong stay at Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Beijing.
To mark its 50th anniversary, Italian furniture brand Maxalto has transformed one of the hotels courtyard-style guest rooms into the limited-time “IN SUITE.” The traditional courtyard architecture provides an authentic Beijing backdrop that blends seamlessly with the surrounding neighbourhood culture.
Nestled within the hutongs, this courtyard-style hotel offers a distinctive Beijing setting for Italian furniture design, where Chinese hospitality interweaves with hutong community culture. The brands furniture collection, from the InToto side table and Apollo sofa to the limited-edition Lilum 50 dormeuse in the tea room, is presented within the tranquil ambiance of the hutong courtyard.
According to Antonio Citterio, Maxaltos Artistic Director, the concept behind this installation is that “a room is not a fluid space but a crystallised state of living.” In the hutongs, Italian craftsmanship meets traditional Chinese living philosophy and tea culture in a compelling cultural exchange.
Adding another layer to the experience, Dutch artist Patrick van Riemsdijk, whos collaborating with Maxalto for this anniversary, is showing his work in China for the first time. His elegant calligraphy-inspired pieces complement Maxaltos clean, timeless aesthetic.
