The near-complete Shanghai Grand Opera House will feature a spiraling roof that doubles as a public stage and observation platform.
The Shanghai Grand Opera House is set to open in the second half of 2026, marking a significant milestone in the citys cultural development. Designed by a consortium led by Snøhetta, alongside East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics, the building is located on the banks of the Huangpu River, serving as a key feature of Shanghai’s cultural and urban masterplan.
Inspired by the fluid movements of dance and performance, the building’s form features a sweeping, helical roof that spirals upward, creating a civic space for public gatherings, elevated views, and informal performances. This design gesture, described as “one shelter,” seamlessly integrates the roof with the surrounding public landscape, which mirrors the opera houses circular geometry in a low-carbon, ecologically conscious layout.
Inside, the opera house balances monumental architecture with sculptural, human-scale details. Vast glazed façades flood the public spaces with natural light, while deep-red, winding volumes create dramatic spatial rhythms. This interplay of light and form makes the interior an immersive experience before performances even begin.
The opera house will host a diverse program of events, ranging from traditional opera and orchestral performances to contemporary and experimental works. The project reflects a close collaboration between international and local firms, ensuring global design innovation with a strong local connection.
