Bedroom Layout Guide: Bed, Wardrobe and Walkway Clearance

Bedroom planning is not simply about choosing a bed frame, wardrobe and wall colour.

It begins with how people move through the room. In Hong Kong homes, where bedrooms are often compact, an oversized bed, insufficient clearance between the wardrobe and bed, or furniture blocking the entrance can make everyday routines feel cramped—even when there is ample storage. A more effective approach is to choose the mattress size first, then work backwards to plan clearances around the bed, at the foot of the bed, in front of the wardrobe and within the door-swing area.

Here are five practical sizing principles to consider before renovating a bedroom, commissioning custom furniture or buying a new bed frame.

1. Leave at least 60 cm beside the bed

The sides of the bed are among the most frequently used areas in a bedroom, especially with a double bed. 60 cm is generally a workable minimum, allowing room to get in and out of bed, change bedding and access the window. If space permits, allowing 75 to 90 cm will feel noticeably more comfortable and make it easier for two people to move around each other.

A small bedroom may not accommodate a full walkway on both sides. If the bed needs to sit against a wall, retain one side as the primary access route and place the other side against the wall where necessary. Still, consider the practicalities of changing sheets, cleaning, and caring for children or older family members. Do not calculate only the mattress dimensions: include the bed frame, headboard and bedside-table depth in the floor plan.

2. Allow 70 to 90 cm at the foot of the bed

The space at the end of the bed is often overlooked, yet it has a direct effect on circulation between the bedroom entrance, bed, wardrobe and window. If it forms part of a daily route, aim for around 75 cm. Where the foot of the bed also accommodates a low cabinet, chest of drawers, bench or access to the wardrobe, 90 cm is a more comfortable target.

If the bed faces a wall and the area is neither a circulation route nor a furniture-use zone, 60 to 70 cm can be acceptable. However, if a chest of drawers with pull-out drawers sits at the foot of the bed, include both the drawer extension and the standing room required to use it. A piece of furniture may physically fit, but still be impractical in daily use.

3. Plan wardrobe clearance around the door type

The depth of a wardrobe is only half the equation. The other half is whether there is enough space to stand, select clothes and reach lower compartments once the doors are opened. For a hinged-door wardrobe, allow around 90 cm in front of it. This accommodates the door swing and gives a person enough room to use the wardrobe comfortably.

A sliding-door wardrobe can reduce the required clearance to around 60 to 70 cm, making it a practical choice when the bed faces the wardrobe in a compact room. However, sliding doors reveal only part of the wardrobe at a time. When planning the interior, avoid grouping the long-hanging section, drawers and frequently used rails on one side only, as the door panel may obstruct access.

4. Keep the main walkway at least 75cm wide

The route from the bedroom door to the bed, wardrobe, window or en-suite should be treated as the room’s main circulation path. Around 75 cm is a practical reference width; if space allows, 90 cm will feel more comfortable—particularly in a shared primary bedroom, a home where luggage is regularly moved, or a room used by older residents.

In a very compact room, 60 to 70 cm may function as a tight minimum for one person, but it should not be reduced to the point where one has to turn sideways to pass. Include the swing arcs of the bedroom door, bathroom door, windows, drawers and wardrobe doors in the layout plan, ensuring they do not occupy the same circulation route at the same time.

5. Choose the mattress first, then the storage

A common mistake in small bedrooms is choosing a large bed or deep wardrobe first, then treating the remaining floor area as the walkway. A more sensible sequence is to identify the number of users, sleeping habits, clothing volume, and whether a desk or dressing area is needed. Confirm the mattress size, protect essential movement space, and only then decide on the wardrobe and other furniture dimensions.

For instance, if both sides of a double bed need to be used, prioritise at least 60 cm of circulation on each side. If the room cannot accommodate a standard hinged wardrobe plus 90 cm of clearance in front, consider sliding doors, a shallower wardrobe, under-bed storage, or relocating seasonal belongings elsewhere. Wall lights, narrow shelves or floating bedside tables can replace conventional nightstands and free up valuable floor area.
