A rare gemstone found nowhere else on earth has become the design muse for The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Caymans reimagined spa.
Celebrating the resorts 20th anniversary, New York-based Champalimaud Design has transformed the award-winning wellness sanctuary by drawing inspiration entirely from Caymanite, the semi-precious stone unique to the Cayman Islands.
With its distinctive organic striations in coral, clay, and sea-washed white, Caymanite dictated the spas entire material and color palette. These flowing patterns mirror the vibrant coral reefs beneath the islands waters, while the lush endemic flora adds botanical layers throughout the space, creating an atmosphere thats both refined and subtly playful.
“Our goal was to create a space that not only reflects Caymans coral reefs, flora, and gemstones, but also offers an immersive sanctuary where guests can reconnect with themselves and the surrounding environment. Every detail, from the textures to the soundscapes, is designed to celebrate the islands heritage while elevating the modern wellness experience,” explains Courtney Brannan, Principal at Champalimaud Design.
The journey begins with a wraparound mural depicting local flora and fauna in greens, blues, and oranges, transitioning from an interior corridor to a tropical entry framed by silver thatch palms. At reception, an argan brown zellige tile and vein-cut travertine desk sits against Calacatta Viola marble and travertine checkerboard flooring, while limewash-painted curved walls in Caymanite hues envelope the space.
Throughout the spa, gentle arches soften the architecture. Locker rooms feature cork flooring, playful squiggle-panel locker fronts, and woven fabrics. Treatment rooms showcase travertine flooring, marble mosaics, illuminated cove ceilings, and wall coverings inspired by the silver thatch palm.
Second-level relaxation rooms feature deep coral red limewash walls creating intimate niches, layered with onyx lighting, curvaceous furnishings, and textured fabrics. Guests pass through the “crystal cave,” a symbolic nod to the islands natural caverns, before entering the fern-green nail room adorned with delicate floral murals.
The expanded facility now offers 16 treatment rooms, including three couples suites and three rooms with private showers. The hydrotherapy area features four cold plunge pools, revitalized saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation lounges. Treatment tables incorporate vibroacoustic technology, synchronizing sound and vibration to deepen the meditative experience. Its a design where a single gemstone tells the story of an entire island.
