GFD Design organises 6,000 sq.ft. home around Qiantang River panoramas through strategic material placement and spatial sequencing.

Positioned along the Qiantang River with panoramic views of the Olympic Sports Center, GFD Design has created a home that balances openness with privacy through careful material selection and strategic sightlines.

The entrance immediately establishes the design language with fan-shaped stone flooring featuring metal inlay strips that guide visitors inward. Water-veined stone walls work alongside dark timber veneers and textured metal accents to create a material palette that references both natural elements and contemporary urban living. This threshold moment sets expectations for a residence that prioritises tactile experience alongside visual drama.

The main living spaces follow a north-south axis that organises the homes public and private zones. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the open living and dining area frame the Qiantang River and city skyline, creating a backdrop that changes throughout the day. The living room uses a warm grey base tone anchored by a marble television wall that serves as a visual focal point. Low, relaxed seating creates conversation areas, while a green-veined stone coffee table provides textural contrast against the neutral carpet.

The dining area continues this material exploration with wave-form pendant lights suspended above a stone table whose deep surface patterns echo the lightings organic shapes. These elements create layered reflections that shift with natural light while maintaining clear sightlines to the water views. The interplay between artificial and natural lighting becomes particularly dramatic during evening hours.

An open western kitchen extends seamlessly from the dining space, centred around a deep green stone island that serves as both workspace and social hub. Geometric pendant lights illuminate the islands dense stone grain, creating warm reflections that interact with nearby wine storage and display areas. Behind frosted glass doors, a separate Chinese kitchen handles traditional cooking methods, demonstrating how contemporary homes accommodate diverse culinary practices while managing ventilation and spatial boundaries.

The study retreats from the main circulation to provide concentrated workspace. Textured beige walls create a calm backdrop for dark timber shelving, while a circular stone table with leather and metal chairs establishes a focused environment for reading and writing. This room deliberately turns away from the river views to support concentration.

The master bedroom showcases the residences most sophisticated material work. Grey wall surfaces incorporate horizontal stone inlay bands that extend the rooms proportions, while concealed ceiling lighting follows recessed edges to create soft ambient illumination. A leather-wrapped headboard provides tactile warmth against the cooler stone surfaces. The ensuite bathroom features grey-white veined stone that suggests flowing water, with a freestanding tub positioned to face the windows and transparent glass partitions that maintain spatial flow while defining functional areas.

Secondary bedrooms address different needs. The north bedroom includes arched wall segments that frame a window-side daybed perfect for elderly residents who want to watch river activity. The south bedroom takes a more restrained approach with vertical textural walls in warm tones and subtle lighting integration.

Throughout the residence, material choices balance contemporary construction techniques with references to traditional Chinese aesthetics. Stone surfaces echo ink-wash painting traditions through their natural veining patterns, while metal details catch and redirect light in ways that complement the riverside setting. Rather than relying on complex geometries, the design achieves harmony through careful sequencing of spaces and surfaces that accommodate the rhythms of daily life.
