From April 9 through 14, design professionals and enthusiasts alike descend on Milan for the most significant week on the design calendar.
Always packed with an overwhelming line-up of shows, launch parties, and other activities, Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile impart insight into the newest trends, and with it, enough inspiration to last you the season. The evidence is on Instagram — see below for five visually stimulating installations.
Fendi and Fendi Casa present "Back Home," by Cristina Celestino
Following a collaboration at Design Miami in 2016, Fendi Casa has again teamed up with architect and interior designer Cristina Celestino for Salone del Mobile 2019. Installed in Fendi's space on Via Solari, the show presents Celestino's latest collection for the storied luxury house, highlighting its Pequin striped motif. The installation evokes a Roman home from the 1970s, complete with marble and onyx accents, and metallic surfaces.
Gucci's Pop-Up Store
Open only during Milan Design Week, Gucci's pop-up boutique on Via Santo Spirito features two full floors decked out in Gucci houseware, from porcelain and decor to furniture. Its creative director, Alessandro Michele, dreamed up a glamorous, rock 'n' roll haven of velvet sofas and armchairs punctuated with accessories in signature Gucci patterns and prints.
Nilufar presents Chez Nina, by India Mahdavi
Renowned for her exceptional use of colour, French architect India Mahdavi transformed Nilufar Gallery into a sexy, atmospheric space enveloped in de Gournay wallcoverings of her design.
Missoni presents "Home Sweet Home," by Alessandra Roveda
Missoni's creative director Angela Missoni partnered with artist Alessandra Roveda to assemble a colourful wonderland. In this wildly vibrant showcase, crochet creations take the spotlight: pillows, side tables, mirrors, and even the bed frame are knitted in rainbow colours.
Maestà Sofferente (Suffering Majesty), by Gaetano Pesce
Mounted against the Piazza del Duomo, Gaetano Pesce's work is hard to miss. Built on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Pesce's UP5_6 Series for B&B Italia, the eight-metre-high outdoor sculpture portrays a female body sheathed in arrows and is meant to spark discussion on feminism and the patriarchy.
