When a working professional and her partner decided to renovate their home, their brief for the design was simple – to create an oasis of calm where they could unwind and disconnect from their demanding jobs.

Says the homeowner, I wanted to create a space where people could feel at ease and relaxed whenever they enter and to make the most of the natural light.

Having lived in the home as a tenant for four years before deciding to make it their own, the couple understood the space well and what decisions would work best for their lifestyle. While the design – where they envisioned an understated chic aesthetic with luxurious finishings – was important, the space also needed to implement sufficient storage solutions. They chose their contractor, Henley Consultant Ltd, because they understood the processes and materials that fulfilled LEED certification requirements. They also worked with Liquid Interiors to conceive the overall aesthetic of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode.

The homeowner admits that she is drawn to mid-century modern and Scandinavian interiors, and this is obvious as soon as you step into the home. Generous light floods the space, uplifting the natural wooden floors and the neutral palette selected for the walls and furnishings. The works of design masters including Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, Fritz Hansen and Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, have been chosen for the spacious living area to create a relaxing vibe, while Eero Saarinen’s marble Tulip table and chairs make a stylish statement in the dining room.

In the dining room, the cabinetry has been built to be as functional as it is aesthetic – dove-grey panels slide open to reveal a curated wine collection and connoisseur-worthy glasses and decanters, while a generous white wardrobe decorated with mirrors opens up to reveal a home gym as well as wardrobe space.

Great detail was also applied in the kitchen, which is outfitted with contemporary tiles and state-of-the-art appliances. When I’m not travelling, I spend a lot of time at home and I love entertaining. I have friends and family that come to visit from abroad quite often, says the homeowner. Out-of-town guests have been taken into account when designing the study, which features a pull-down Murphy bed.

In the master ensuite, soft pastel hues steal the show, and a Ligne Roset bed takes centre stage. When asked what is her favourite part of the home, the homeowner says, I think it’s this spot, at the dining table, that I love most as I feel so at peace. Seeing the space bathed in the soft afternoon glow and the beauty of natural light, it’s not hard to see why.
