Suzhou, China: Sangha Retreats
Situated on a peninsula just half an hour from downtown Suzhou, China, Sangha Retreat is a lakeside retreat designed by New York firm Tsao & McKown alongside other elite designers, including Neri & Hu. The 190,000-square-metre estate spans 108 private waterfront villas, a clinic and healing spa, and — for those inclined — guest suites that come with both Chinese and Western medical therapy. Its founder, business magnate Fred Tsao, conceived the retreat with Confucian and Taoist philosophies supported by Western science in mind.
In Jakarta, Indonesia: Alila Jakarta
The new five-star hotel is a striking new addition to Jakarta’s skyline — and the interiors are no less dramatic, with architect and artist Richard Hassell’s large-scale Birds, Bats, and Butterflies installation adorning the lobby. Opened in February 2019, the hip property also features impressive dining concepts from critically acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (of New York’s Jean-Georges) as well as the Hakkasan Group.
In Bangkok, Thailand: The Rosewood Bangkok
Following a highly anticipated opening in Hong Kong, the Rosewood Group debuted Rosewood Bangkok in April, the 27th property in its global portfolio and the second in Thailand. The 30-storey hotel promises a highly attentive, ultra-luxurious experience within beautifully appointed premises designed by Celia Chu Design Associates alongside Kohn Pederson Fox and Tandem Architects.
In Niseko, Japan: Skye Niseko
Niseko’s ever-growing popularity as another travel destination in Japan gives rise to a new luxury luxury condominium-hotel in Hirafu. Nestled within Hokkaido National Park, the Wilson Associates-designed ski resort also offers a collection of 100 residential apartments and five penthouse suites. “In true Japanese tradition, the property exudes sophistication and understated elegance,” says Kendall Thompson of Wilson Associates. “The unique location, combined with contemporary interiors, extensive amenities, and visionary architecture form the foundation for Skye Niseko.”
In Hainan, China: Capella Sanya
Architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston designed the new Capella Sanya, which opened its doors in January 2019. Six private villas and 190 suites are set on the coastline of Blessed Bay in Hainan Island with views of the South China Sea, and each detail adheres to principles of feng shui. “This is a resort respecting Chinese culture and Chinese symbolism,” explains Gathy. “We respect the way that the Chinese live — and what we have here is genuine.”
