The elegant residence of Gulnar and Kavine Vaswani merges art, textures, culture and personal curios to gorgeous effect.
The result of our collaborations turned out completely differently to what we originally imagined,” says Simon Chong, the founder of Simon Chong Design Consultants Limited, who undertook the project.
Gulnar presented me with a storybook of references, which was mainly American Classic style with timeless grey tones,” Simon recalls. This abode is bathed in light from all directions, so I felt it would be a pity to play this all down with such a monochrome palette. We experimented together and I decided to play on the family’s favourite colours – Gulnar loves blue, Kavine loves orange and red, while their sons Jahaan and Rohaan are partial to blue and green.”
Spanning 5,000 square feet over four storeys in Shouson Hill, the home is filled with timeless furniture from Baker, Promemoria and Hamilton, and Simon sourced the perfect pieces of artwork by Yao Jui-Chung to flank a custom built drinks cabinet he designed in the living room. The couple love the Oriental look of this piece, and the tones of red and blue paired with gold are so eye-catching,” the designer explains. The artist used a special paper made from India and combined a traditional backdrop of scenery with contemporary motifs so the effect is quite interesting.”

Countering this and taking pride of place on the opposite wall is an evocative piece by Walasse Ting that Simon acquired at a Sotheby’s auction. Simon took the lead in sourcing the artwork and his sensitivity to our needs, our likes and our personalities really shone throughout the whole renovation process,” Gunlar praises. As a designer, he has amazing vision and the ability to execute that vision. He’s a person who’s kind, responsive, respectful and he has a natural sense of due diligence.”
With demanding and successful careers – Gulnar is a talent management strategist and advisor who founded her own company, Your Best Forward, to help corporates and individuals recognize and achieve their potential, while Kavine is the CEO of Hong Kong-based commodity trading company Assudamal & Sons – their home is their haven and a true reflection of the family’s lifestyle preferences.

We love spending time together and chose this area because we like the quiet and the open outdoor spaces,” says Gulnar, who admits that it’s often hard for them to leave the home. My favourite part is my bedroom and bathroom,” she says, referring to the tranquil master oasis designed in serene hues of blues and whites. I often mediatate to the tree outside.”
From a range of interesting wallcoverings, to unique wooden flooring, marble countertops, rugs, to beautifully upholstered headboards and wardrobes, there is no shortage of lush, rich materials used throughout the residence. And perhaps the most impressive aspect about the overall design is that it is such an assemblage of different styles and materials, yet everything just falls into place naturally. My husband is hard to please but he is probably the most house proud of us all,” Gulnar reveals.

Having grown up in the States, and with homes in Vancouver, London and Miami, these global citizens are no strangers to extensive renovations, which makes them appreciate this experience with Simon all the more. He took away all the pain in what would otherwise be a very stressful situation,” Gulnar concludes. We love our home – it’s really our kind of perfect.”
