India’s architectural legacy is steeped in history, culture and religion. From Jaipur’s lavish City Palace (constructed from red and pink sandstone) to the spectacular symmetry of the subcontinent’s most celebrated structure, the Taj Mahal, and the Group of Monuments at Hampi (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), buildings across the redolent peninsula evoke influence, romance and mysticism.
However, these qualities aren’t exclusive to ancient marvels. Contemporary projects excite the senses in equal measure; take this stunning family home on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat as an example. Designed by the Indian office of German architecture and design firm Blocher Blocher Partners, the arresting abode is set amid a vast, verdant garden and has been built according to the age-old architectural philosophy of vastu shastra, which translates literally to the science of architecture” and aims to promote the integration of nature into the design of a building.
