In designing an expansive four-bedroom family home in Hong Kong’s Mid-levels, Kay Ngai found that a sparse brief left a good deal of room for creativity. The owner knew that she wanted colours to be very neutral and not at all bright, far from the traditional Chinese style, says Kay of Charms Interior Design and Decoration, noting that the couple were fond of clean lines and hard surfaces. But I explained that there was a risk of the place not looking exceptional, and also feeling very cold, so we worked to create something much more unique.

Over the course of the design process, the clients and designer collaborated to produce an altogether different aesthetic – one that saw the 3,700 sqft view-laden space become striking and modern, but also welcoming and at times even playful.

Kay drew heavily from the personal style of the couple, as well as the needs of their three teenage children. She envisioned a space that was chic and not overtly flashy, but that had clear luxe elements. Signposts also came courtesy of the few items that were retained by the family from their old home. These included a beautiful contemporary painting in muted gold tones, a chandelier, and embroidered linen curtains.
