The idea of this house is based on strong concepts, and the design development process was very intuitive, says Jan who toghether with his wife, Christyne, has build an avant-garde home in Ubud, Bali. The house is named Umah Tampih, which means folding house in Balinese, and is fitting given that its design is inspired by Japanese origami.

The couple felt very connected to Bali, and quickly fell in love with its culture and rhythm of life. So it felt natural to ask their good friend, architect Cheong Yew Kuan, who is noted for work that melds with nature as seen in Como Shambhala in Ubud, to design the house. The result is an enchanting, multifaceted home consisting of three buildings with defined, slanting lines that surround an open garden. The interaction of the structures and the open air spaces provide a remarkable outdoor-indoor living experience.
