This beautiful home, known as @itsonthethirdfloor on Instagram, embodies comfort and creativity - a sentimental value that resonates with its 19,000 Instagram followers.
For 26-year-old Paulien and her partner, life in Ghent was no longer fulfilling post-pandemic. The couple, both freelancers and working mostly from home, recognised the impact of their environment on their productivity and comfort. Feeling the need for fresh challenge, they moved to Brussels, bringing with them their passion for interior design and love for vintage decor. Their stylish home embodies creativity, comfort and sentimental values.
But their vintage haven's story began long before they moved into their current home. Prior to living together, the couple scoured flea markets and second-hand stores, collecting rare finds that they stored in their grandparents' attics, because as Paulien enthused, "when you find a gem, you can't leave it there".
Their stunning home features two bedrooms, one bathroom and a massive living room with a beautiful bow window and wooden beams. Their bedroom is tucked away in the corner of the apartment, providing privacy and the freedom for one partner to entertain guests in the living area without disturbing the other. Accessible from the store room on the 6th floor, the outdoor roof space provides an excellent view and an effortless, peaceful relaxation spot for both them and their friends.
When asked about their home's blue and orange colour scheme, Paulien admitted that they stumbled on it rather than plan it out. The colour scheme is centred around the two main decor pieces – a blue mirror constructed by her partner's uncle and an orange Ligne Roset Togo vintage piece. They also use red and yellow, balancing them with wood and a pop of white, to create a warm, inviting ambiance.
The creative couple's personalities shines through their furniture, décor and artwork choices. Paulien's boyfriend creates digital prints and paintings to hang in their dining area. Her mom knitted a blanket that gave their flat a warm touch. She finds inspiration in other people's interior designs and color schemes, but visiting thrift stores provides the ultimate inspiration for her. They own a plethora of unique second-hand finds. "We didn’t rush decorating our home so there was room to stumble upon more vintage finds," Paulien reflects on their home's decor. "We only own one piece of IKEA and I'm kind of proud of that."
