A young couple, fond of travelling to Japan, wanted their home in Lai Chi Kok to reflect the simplicity and elegance of Japanese design. The team at L Vogue Design brought their dream to life.

This 522 sq ft apartment has a living room, two rooms – including a study and a bedroom, as well as a bathroom and kitchen. According to Saipen Ng, the founder and design director of L Vogue Design, “In our design, we emphasise spatial awareness. For homeowners, the general storage capacity is already sufficient. Moreover, they expect a lighting effect that creates a relaxed atmosphere. The design focuses on presenting a Japanese-style layout, with Japanese elements such as wooden grilles and rattan mesh on the TV cabinet, and a consistent overall design and colour tone."

The entire home uses three types of wood tones: deep oak, light oak and walnut. Engineered wood veneer is used extensively throughout, complemented by oak composite flooring and solid wood furniture. The all-white walls and ceiling provide a clean backdrop for the light wood tones and fine wood grain textures, evoking a Japanese-inspired atmosphere. Furthermore, the use of cement-effect fire-resistant boards and tempered glass for the door and window frames adds a touch of sophistication.
The living room showcases a spacious wooden lattice design displayed on the TV wall and cabinet. In the study, a section of the wall was replaced with transparent glass partitions, accented with wooden frames and walnut shutters. The lighting design features a continuous ceiling fixture that spans the living and dining areas, creating a sense of simplicity and order. Additionally, the narrow corridor connecting the rooms is adorned with a wooden decorative ceiling, subtly distinguishing between the different areas.

The master bedroom continues the deep and light oak wood treatment from the living room. To conceal the window-type air conditioner, a layered, richly textured cement decorative wall is designed. The wardrobe features long-honed glass and custom-made wooden handles, adding visual interest.

As for the bathroom, grey wall tiles with a smoked glass texture are selected, paired with white sanitary ware, unifying the overall design.
"The male homeowner reached out to us because he knew that we don't only focus on a single design style, and have a track record of award-winning works. He hoped that we could help him create his dream home," Ng added. "Although the residential unit is not large, it allows the homeowner to experience a Japanese ambiance while living in Hong Kong. We and the homeowner are extremely satisfied with the completed work, which has also won multiple international awards, including the International Design Awards - Honourable Mention, int Interior Design Awards winner, and Muse Design Awards silver prize."
