This Mid-Levels sanctuary by ARCHI.VAL reveals its secrets only when you need them.
Client Brief
The homeowners lead a deeply private lifestyle and sought a serene retreat that centres on privacy and tranquillity. Their vision was a home that reflected who they are while fostering wellbeing and ease of living.

Concept and Style
The abode boasts a sleek, minimal aesthetic, with many functional features up its sleeve. Upon entering, guests are greeted by an expansive, uncluttered entrance, thanks to the clever use of full-scale mirrors that conceal a pantry. When revealed, the hidden pantry showcases meticulously crafted shelves adorned with luxurious textures. The marble backsplash and countertops exude opulence, while the dark wood cabinetry provides a cohesive and elegant backdrop.
Adjacent to the living room is an art corridor that doubles as a dining area. Here, a sliding table that folds into the wall can be extended for dining or workspace purposes. The table’s dark wood finish harmonises with the surrounding cabinetry, maintaining a unified and sophisticated design.

Challenge
Fitting multiple functions into a limited space is a common challenge in Hong Kong. “The home needed to appear minimal, but be versatile enough for different activities,” says Archi.val co-founder Paul Li. “The main challenge was creating spaces that stay hidden until you want them.”

Solution
The apartment is curated based on the principles of “open” and “hidden”. Most storage spaces are cleverly concealed to maintain a sleek and uncluttered look. “That way, you can easily switch things up to match your needs and preferences,” Li adds.
Design Tips
- Zoning in: Divide different areas subtly using texture and materiality to keep the room feeling open, yet defined.

- Nice touch: Combining plush, soft accents with sleek, polished, or rugged hard elements, adds depth and visual intrigue. For instance, a textured stone wall crafted from polyurethane introduces a rugged charm that beautifully contrasts with smooth surfaces and soft fabrics in the bedroom.
