A cosy haven for a retired couple, this Mid-Levels apartment marries a rich variety of colours, textures, and hidden storage that creates an understated luxury flair. Each room reflects the homeowners' lifestyle and taste, with a smart home system cleverly woven throughout. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also functional and welcoming.
CLIENT BRIEF
The couple seeks a generous, comfortable living space to enjoy their happy retirement.
DESIGN STYLE
"Rather than an extravagant design, we have created a residence that embodies a sense of understated luxury," notes Mary Wong, the founder of Haven Design. The home embraces rich textures and colours such as olive, burgundy, and warm woods, accentuated by creamy walls for an exquisite flair. Detailed mouldings grace the ceilings, imparting a soft touch that enhances the overall beauty.
CHALLENGES
A significant challenge of the project is the foyer, which originally lacked natural light and had limited floor area. However, a decent first impression is everything.
SOLUTIONS
The design team opens up the foyer with arched windows and decorative wood panels, definitively separating it from the living and dining room while at the same time creating a sense of flow and unity. The openings allow light and views to pass through, enhancing the sense of space and openness upon entering the home.
Design Tips:
- Behind Closed Doors: There is a lot of storage space beneath the eyes in this home – the bar area behind the sofa, cabinets concealed behind invisible doors in the corridor, which make for a clean, unified look when closed.
- The Little Things: Elegant rose gold accents are used throughout the three bathrooms in this home as a common thread. It’s always nice to have something that visually connects different areas, even with varying styles.
- Stay Focused: A vibrant feature wall at the far end of the hallway serves as a focal point as you move from the living room to the bedroom, introducing visual interest to the space.
- Form and Function: A shower seat, handles, floor heating system, and a smart toilet can be found in the bathrooms tailored for the couple’s safety and convenience. When designed correctly, they don’t necessarily have to compromise aesthetics.
- Stay Smart: A smart system has been incorporated to keep lighting and curtains in control anytime, anywhere.
