Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, a woman famed for her bold use of colours and prints, once said: Style is about confidence – that’s the real beauty. The same edict applies as much to interiors as it does to apparel. As soon as you enter the home of Shana Buchanan – who also enjoys Von Furstenberg’s ease with palettes and patterns – it’s evident that the vibrant abode’s undeniable appeal is the product of an established and inherent aesthetic assurance.
As the founder of online decor store iDecorate, which recently opened a physical location in Times Square in Causeway Bay, Shana’s eye for design comes as little surprise. However, she admits that when faced with the task of tackling the home she shares with her husband and their young son, she didn’t quite know how to begin. The biggest challenge for me was the vast number of white walls and not knowing where to start, which colour direction to take, and how to bring the space to life so it didn’t feel sterile and cold.

Shana couldn't find dining chairs that were comfortable, contemporary and affordable, so she decided to take matters into her own hands – and design them herself. The result is a stunning velour-covered dining chair in a delicate shade of duck-egg blue with stately brass legs. Now available at iDecorate, the Lily chair is one of Buchanan’s favourite pieces in her flat, not least because its conception accelerated the vision for the entire residence.
Geometric patterns, sinuous curves and contemporary artworks by Byron Bay-based artist Jai Vasicek and British born artist Ali McNabey-Stevens, who also practices in Australia, all intermingle with effortless harmony in the open living room.
An inviting velvet armchair and ottoman invite you to take a moment's repose and appreciate your surroundings.
The room belonging to Shana's son Axel is a veritable playground of the imagination, with fun fabrics by Sack Me! and even a blackboard wall for drawing on.
Velour ottomans, a transparent dressing table and a gorgeous assortment of fabrics and throws from Australian brand Kip & Co transform the master bedroom into an otherworldly refuge.
The enormous, wraparound terrace is dog Hershey's domain, although it is ideal for entertaining. Graphic black and white outdoor mats add visual interest.
