Nestled amidst the tranquil mountains of Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, this beautiful three-story residence stands as a testament to modern serenity.
Crafted by the esteemed design firm Bean Buro, led by co-founders Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, this home balances the practical requirements of a family of four with an unwavering commitment to their mental health and well-being.
Employing a sophisticated blend of playful design elements and soothing hues, this 2,860 sq. ft. captures the post-pandemic shift toward restorative living spaces, vital in bustling cities like Hong Kong. The design draws significant inspiration from the art of Paul Cézanne, the renowned post-impressionist French artist. "His paintings of Provence inspired our narrative, reflecting the soothing greenery and serene mountainous landscapes of his homeland," noted Kinugasa-Tsui. “Through Cézanne’s artistry, we envisioned a design language that balanced elegance with playfulness, integrating natural timber, verdant hues, curvaceous forms, and vertical elements reminiscent of trees,” Faure added.
Using a blend of thoughtful creativity, empathetic engagement, and collaborative innovation, the designers crafted a home that meets practical needs while also being adaptable and flexible for future changes. Bean Buro held immersive workshops with clients that encouraged collaboration to come up with innovative, health-focused, and eco-friendly ideas for everyday living. This hands-on approach helped clients think beyond the usual brief, leading to a curated list of desired spaces, like a cosy lounge for entertaining guests and fun play areas for kids.
The home's spatial design takes inspiration from the "building within a building" concept, cleverly separating private, semi-private, and public areas across its three levels and rooftop terrace. Each space is carefully planned to fit the family's diverse activities and routines, encouraging connection and interaction through thoughtful features like sculptural staircases.
A key challenge was not just addressing the family's varied requirements, but also creating an environment that supports healing and mental wellness in a post-pandemic world. The designers recognised the importance of lighting, acoustics, and material choices for mental well-being, and thoughtfully incorporated these elements into their approach.
By using efficient acoustic partitions and a range of lighting options, especially focusing on colour temperature, the designers have created an environment that promotes different atmospheres tailored to each family member's preferences and activities.
The result is a cosy and luxurious retreat that serves as a testament to the designers' commitment to the vital role of well-being in residential design.
