Clean lines, very minimal decor and light colours give a feeling of freshness and openness to this 2,000-sq.ft. Bel-Air abode.
Paco Interior Design skilfully leveraged what the pad of a family of three has and spelt sheer fluidity of space. “We did a renovation for the clients some years back and the couple is ready to retire now. They plan to stay in the home after retirement so they’re looking at a revamp to make it a better fit for their living needs,” said Gary Lau, Design Director of Paco Interior Design.
Whereas the last makeover was mostly minimalist and cool, without any retouch on the kitchen and bathroom, this time Lau and his team were going for something more contemporary and remodelled the layout. The residence now houses a roomy living area, a master bedroom with a walk-in closet, a study and the son’s bedroom.
Considering how the front door opens directly into the living/dining room, Lau has designed a foyer that makes a stylish first impression, showcasing a bold, colourful painting he purchased for the project.
To make every square footage count, Lau came up with a creative trick to tuck in the often unsightly air conditioner: The air conditioning system being integrated into the suspended ceiling gives off a neat and tidy look, sans a bulky compressor and air handler.
Looking at the interiors, you’d also notice the absence of any pendants. “We hid in and integrated all the spotlights into the walls and ceilings to cast a relaxing glow rather than a direct downlight. It’s also a tried-and-tested means to declutter the space.” Besides, given the flat’s geographical advantage, what better way than making the most of the gorgeous natural daylight and fan it across the space?
“The dropped ceiling articulates the foyer and general living area. As you enter the dining room, the ceiling height slightly raises, although still suspended. Inside the living room is an exposed ceiling to maximise the floor-to-ceiling height for a generous space feeling,” Lau explained.
If there’s one thing that binds the design throughout the whole house, it’s the wood beam fin wall from the entrance and TV wall to the partition wall between the master bedroom and walk-in closet; the burnt orange, yellow and brown shades add warmth and sophistication into the space.
