If you’re among the lucky few who have expansive dining rooms, you have the luxury of using sideboards, bookshelves or freestanding cabinets to shape the dining area, which creates a more homey atmosphere, says interior designer Jason Yung. You could even set up a home bar, or a pre-dinner sitting area with armchairs to create a more luxurious space, he says.
The dining table is the focal point, so it’s worth allocating more budgets on it. Whether you go for a round or rectangular table depends on the room, your family, how many people you wish to seat around it, and whether it might double up as a work desk.

Rectangular ones fit better in narrow spaces, and are good room dividers, says Helen. If space allows, Jason suggests making the table big enough for six people. Start with 1500mm x 1500mm, 1600mm diameter or 1800mm x 900mm, he says. Avoid small dining tables: a small square table would look like a mahjong table, and a small round one wouldn’t allow enough space for different sharing dishes, says Jason. It’d look better and be more practical to have a long bar counter for casual dining.
