Danish design is all about doing more with less — focusing on functionality, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal instead of chasing trends that fizzle out fast.
A Danish designer once said to me: “We don’t mind spending a bit more on quality furniture because it can last for generations”. This philosophy pretty much sums up Danish design – an approach rooted in functionality, quality, and longevity.
This isn’t just furniture; it’s a mindset. The clean lines, thoughtful details, and sturdy craftsmanship mean these pieces aren’t just for now — they’re for forever. Whether it’s in your living room, an office, or a cozy café, Danish furniture has a way of blending in while standing out.
We’ve rounded up five Danish furniture brands that truly get it right. These are the names quietly transforming spaces all over the world — and they’re about to do the same for yours.
GUBI

Founded in 1967 by Lisbeth and Bjarke Olsen, GUBI has built its reputation on rediscovering overlooked classics and creating modern icons. It bridges decades of design history, working with designers such as Pierre Paulin, Gio Ponti, and Louis Weisdorf. GUBI’s collection combines function and aesthetics, offering a range of pieces that feel both classic and contemporary.
The Pacha Lounge Chair by Pierre Paulin, designed in 1975, is one of GUBI’s standout pieces. It was inspired by the idea of “sitting on clouds,” with its low, rounded shape offering comfort and informality. The chair’s design, with its soft curves and optional armrests, introduced a new way of living closer to the ground, breaking away from the rigidity of post-war furniture.

Another highlight is the Multi-Lite Lamp by Louis Weisdorf, created in 1972. Its adjustable shades allow users to direct light in multiple ways, making it practical as well as decorative. The lamp’s clean design and adaptability make it a versatile choice for modern interiors.

The Beetle Chair by GamFratesi, created in 2013, has also become a modern classic. Inspired by the structure of a beetle, the chair features a two-part outer shell paired with a cushioned inner surface, designed to provide comfort and flexibility. Its curved shell adapts to different sitting positions, making it both functional and versatile. Available in various upholstery options and configurations, the Beetle Chair is suitable for a wide range of settings, from dining rooms to offices. GUBI has further enhanced the Beetle Collection by incorporating recycled-plastic composites, aligning with sustainable production practices while maintaining its iconic design.

GUBI is available at WOOL, a Scandinavian furniture retailer in Hong Kong.

Montana Furniture
Founded in 1982, Montana Furniture is known for its modular systems, bold use of colour, and focus on customisation. This family-owned company produces its furniture in Haarby, Denmark, with a focus on sustainability and high-quality craftsmanship.
Montana’s collection includes iconic reproductions of designs by Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, and Jørgen Rasmussen, alongside contemporary pieces by Jens Martin Skibsted and Kasper Mose. The brand’s modular systems, available in a wide range of colours, allow users to create highly personalised spaces.
One recent addition to Montana’s portfolio is the KIMPOP Limited Editions, a collaboration with Danish creative duo KIMPOP. This series reimagines Montana’s modular furniture with bright colours and bold designs, encouraging creativity and self-expression in interiors. The limited collection is available until December 2025.
Mater
Founded in Copenhagen in 2006, Mater is a leader in sustainable furniture and lighting design. The brand focuses on circularity, using waste materials to create high-quality pieces.
The Terra Collection, designed by OEO Studio, is Mater’s first lighting series made from Matek, a patented material that combines e-waste and coffee shell residues. The collection includes pendant, wall, and portable lamps, each with a minimalist conical shape. The textured finish of Matek gives the lamps a natural look, resembling materials like stone or wood.
The Terra Collection demonstrates Mater’s commitment to sustainability while maintaining a strong design focus. By using recycled materials, the brand addresses two significant waste streams—electronics and coffee waste—and continues to explore ways to innovate with less environmental impact.
Space Copenhagen

Established in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, Space Copenhagen works across furniture, lighting, and interiors. The studio describes its style as “Poetic Modernism,” balancing contrasts such as classic and modern, industrial and organic.
Space Copenhagen has created interiors for acclaimed spaces like the 11 Howard Hotel in New York and Noma in Copenhagen. Its furniture collaborations with brands such as GUBI, &Tradition, and Mater focus on clean lines, natural materials, and timeless appeal.
The Fly Series for &Tradition is a prime example. With its slatted wood backrest and soft, supportive cushions, the series combines traditional craftsmanship with modern comfort.

For Mater, Space Copenhagen designed a Dining Chair with a rounded backrest and leather upholstery. The chair is made from sustainably sourced oak or beech and offers a refined yet practical design that works well in a variety of settings.
Garde Hvalsøe
Garde Hvalsøe focuses on custom-made kitchens and interiors, creating spaces that combine functionality with refined materials. The brand’s collaboration with Nicolai Nørregaard, Head Chef at Kadeau, highlights its ability to create designs tailored to specific needs.
For Kadeau’s test kitchen, Garde Hvalsøe crafted a Solid kitchen model using HeartOak and light knotted oak. The design balances elegance and practicality, with a zinc wet zone that develops a patina over time. This section was designed for working with liquids and staining ingredients, meeting the demands of a professional kitchen.

The layout was customised to include drawers for foraged ingredients and shelving for ceramics by Torben Lov, Kadeau’s exclusive ceramicist. The kitchen also serves as a private dining space, with seating, shelving, and lighting designed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
