Mae Design Studio transforms a 498-sq.ft. home in Tiu Keng Leng into a comforting cocoon.
Fusing minimalism, neutral colours and natural materials, the Japandi style has been making waves the last few years and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. This design is especially popular in Hong Kong, where residents find refuge in the relief the style offers amidst the stress and hustle of the city. Mae Design Studio artfully worked this soothing theme into this Tiu Keng Leng home to completely transform the space into a picture of serenity.
Upon entering the home, you’re greeted with a muted and earthy colour palette in a minimalistic, light-filled space. In the living and dining room, a tailor-made curved panel moulding that extends to the window was built onto the wall to resemble a cradle-like atmosphere. Its concave waves, along with a large window that frames luscious mountain views, create a sense of tranquillity. Different textures such as the wooden dining table, golden door knobs and the marble television cabinet add interest and complexity to the space.
In the master bedroom, convex waves are used to create structural layers and enrich the complexity. The design firm utilised a built-in wardrobe and bedside table to create an uncluttered look while maximising space. The queen-sized bed is set against a headboard made with wooden poles, with a globe-like pendant light hanging from above. The walls are a muted grey with subtle white lines, which adds a sense of cosiness and softness, Scandinavian hygge, to the room.
The bathroom and office space follows the same simplistic and functional theme, with special touches such curved panels that hide extra storage space and the elegant, oblong bathroom mirror. “Ultimately, we hope to bring out comfort and soothingness through the lightweight and airy design,” said Mae Design Studio.
