A few tricks to make spaces lighter, brighter, and airier.
1. Make Use of Light
Natural light opens up the interior of any room and makes it look larger. So if you have access to natural light, bring it into your home through large windows. This will instantly connect your rooms with the outdoors. Else, use a few lamps to spread light evenly around the room instead of relying completely on one overhead light.
2. Declutter
With things neatly arranged and out of sight, the space that is in view will feel instantly orderly and open. That’s why: declutter, declutter, declutter. The fewer objects in a room, the airier it will feel. In smaller rooms, scale back on bulky decor and other unnecessary items. Either get rid of them or move them to larger rooms with more natural light.
3. Add Mirrors
By using materials that you can see through, anything beyond will appear farther away. Mirrors, for instance, can make your room look larger and more open. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors toward it to give the illusion of depth. Mirrors also reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter during the day and night.
4. Adopt Open-Plan Layouts
Airy, spacious and versatile, open-concept living rooms are a popular design choice for the modern home. The benefits of open floor plans are endless: an abundance of natural light and the illusion of more space. An open-concept configuration is oftentimes the rule of thumb to make a small home appear instantly bigger.
5. Incorporate Light Colours
In the design world, it’s well known that light paint colours make a room look bigger and brighter. Light and bright walls are more reflective, making a space feel open and airy, which helps maximise natural light’s effect. In contrary, dark shades tend to absorb light, making rooms feel smaller. The soft tones of blue and green are most ideal.
