In our chaotic, fast-paced lives, we often find ourselves longing for a fundamental necessity: peace. Mae Design Studio embodies this essence in every project, creating minimalistic and elegant homes that nurture the soul.
Their latest creation — a 1,500 sq. ft. house set amidst the idyllic landscapes of Tai Po — beautifully embodies this philosophy. Designed for a family of five, this three-story residence radiates warmth and sophistication.
"The project posed a challenge as it aimed to cater to the diverse needs of multiple generations, spanning from grandchildren to grandparents," remarked Marcus Chan, Design Director at Mae Design Studio. The older generation desired a comforting, traditional atmosphere, while the younger crowd favored a minimalist aesthetic. "It took us some time to find the perfect balance that would satisfy everyone."
Mae Design Studio drew inspiration from Japanese minimalism to craft a home that merges modernity with tradition. This four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence showcases a warm, muted colour palette complemented by organic textures.
Wood and Japanese interiors complement each other beautifully, playing a crucial role in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the home. From the doors and floors to the stairs and parts of the walls, the natural grains and rich hues of wood infuse the space with earthy charm.
In the living room, off-white walls create a soft backdrop for wooden cabinets that blend style with functionality. An array of earth-toned throw pillows on a cream sofa adds comfort and vibrancy, enhancing the room's aesthetic appeal. A textured white area rug underfoot offers a delightful contrast, enriching the overall ambiance and inviting relaxation.
Deliberate asymmetry in the arrangement of colours and lines introduces depth to the minimalist design. Furthermore, the soft curves at the corners of the living and dining area walls evoke a sense of enclosure.
Incorporating glass features, such as expansive windows and sliding doors that connect the living room to the garden and the bedrooms to the balconies, enhances the sense of openness. This thoughtful design invites natural light to gracefully illuminate the organic materials throughout the space.
A standout feature of this Tai Po home, and a personal favourite of Chan's, is the redesigned garage. "We transformed the typical, utilitarian garage into a minimalist, gallery-inspired space, redefining its conventional perception," he shares with us.
Mae Design Studio's thoughtful approach ensures that this Tai Po residence is not only visually appealing but also highly functional. The result is a home that envelops its inhabitants in comfort, making them feel embraced by its warm atmosphere.
