Minus Workshop conceives a zen oasis in the heart of Hong Kong for a family with a love for Japanese culture.
Kevin Yiu, the founder of Minus Workshop, has long been inspired by Eastern philosophies, and when he took over a residential project from a family who loves Japanese culture and craves a respite from the bustling city life, he knew “Japanese”, “Zen”, and “Calm” would constitute big parts of the brief.
Within this 1,290-sq.ft. apartment, Yiu sought to reinvent Japanese minimalism and translate his own version of wabi-sabi. The living room steers clear of excess embellishment and yet includes statement pieces to give just that punch to ground the whole space, including an extraordinary ocean-inspired art piece by Agape and the Tekiò pendant lamp from Santa & Cole. The raw stone sculptured step coupled with the planter tray cultivates a foil emanating the soothing atmosphere of a Japanese garden.
The passage of the apartment is intentionally narrow, seamlessly transitioning between the family’s gathering space and private realms. The raised platform floor offers great storage capability. The kids’ bedroom is designed based on a tree house; in the master bedroom, the full sliding windows and balcony brings in large swathes of sunlight and affords the couple unparalleled sea view and cityscape.
