Good work leads to returning clients, and this 665 square foot apartment in The Grandiose, Tseung Kwan O, is living proof. Designed a decade ago by Oscar Yeung, it has been invited back for a well-deserved refresh.

The brief was clear: retain the original minimalist aesthetic, but maximise storage. “White is still the dominant colour,” says OK Decoration Design’s Oscar Yeung, “but the material landscape has evolved dramatically.

“Even ‘white’ now comes in a vast spectrum of shades and textures. We opted for a sleek grey stone-look tile in the living area to unify the space, complemented by grey wood and marble accents. A touch of champagne gold on the cabinet edges adds a touch of understated luxury.”

The living room’s stunning sea views were slightly compromised by glimpses of neighbouring buildings. Yeung’s solution was a strategically placed screen.

“It screens the neighbouring buildings without sacrificing natural light,” he explains. “The translucent material allows sunlight and the sea view to permeate the space, reaching even the entrance.”

To the living room’s white walls, he added carefully curated artwork and decorative pieces. “Negative space is key,” he notes, “but a focal point is essential. The textured acrylic paintings provide depth and a touch of drama.”

The L-shaped overhead cabinet is another clever touch. “It’s barely the depth of a book,” he points out, “yet it provides substantial discreet storage while concealing structural beams and utility pipes, streamlining the overall aesthetic.” Curved corners on the dining area’s L-shaped cabinet offer a practical benefit, simplifying cleaning.

The entrance features a retractable dining table, ideal for the busy homeowners who seldom dine in. Above it hangs a British-designed pendant lamp with an acrylic diffuser for a contemporary touch.

The master bedroom underwent the most dramatic transformation. “We basically combined the hallway and two bedrooms,” Yeung explains.

“This created a spacious suite with ample room for a generous wardrobe, a dedicated dressing area, and three-sided access to the bed. A sliding screen ensures privacy for the dressing area. The former guest bathroom is now a stylish en suite, complete with a dedicated laundry zone for added functionality.”

The compact 100 square foot study is a testament to clever space planning. Yeung designed a versatile work/play area, incorporating a raised platform for storage and an adjustable electric desk.

A lot has changed compared to 10 years ago, he adds. “Technology advances rapidly; appliances are light years ahead of where they were a decade ago. Also, the homeowners’ tastes have evolved, informed by their extensive travels. Clear communication and detailed explanations of design choices were paramount.”

Yet the project has been rewarding, he concludes. “It provided a unique opportunity to refine and improve upon my earlier work – and that’s what it’s all about.”
