In the leafy suburb of Malvern East, Victoria, historical charm meets contemporary allure in an early 2000s family home that stood ready for a much-needed transformation.
Once a bustling hub for a family of five, the house had lost its lustre over the years, leaving behind a neutral, uninspired palette. As the children grew and started to embark on their own paths, the family felt it was time to bid farewell to the old and welcome a more sophisticated, adult-friendly environment. For interior designer David Puckering from The Stylesmiths, the mission was clear: eliminate every hint of beige, introduce vibrant colours and textures, and create a cosy and inviting space.
Blending the aesthetic of the classic "Brady Bunch" with celebrated architect Alistair Knox, this eclectic style drew inspiration from the 1970s Eltham design, known for its use of recycled materials and mud bricks. Earthy greens, brushed brass, walnut veneers, and micro cement were skillfully incorporated to craft a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere. The main fireplace, clad in rustic "brick effect" tile, paid homage to Alistair Knox's iconic brickwork.
Stepping inside, one is enveloped by a living space rich in texture, earthy tones, and vibrant hues. The foundation is a caramel-toned sectional sofa, radiating warmth. The focal point, however, is the striking mustard armchair, its plush fabric and vintage-inspired design injecting a bold pop of colour while maintaining the space's overall harmony. Sleek, black nesting coffee tables serve as both a functional centrepiece and a stylish counterpoint.
The kitchen presents a blend of rich, warm wood and deep, earthy green cabinetry. Designed for the avid entertainer homeowner, the natural wood finish radiates an inviting warmth, creating a tactile contrast against the sleek, dark countertop. This interplay is accentuated by the earthy green cabinetry, reminiscent of the lush landscapes surrounding the residence.
A standout feature is the cleverly hidden butler's pantry, concealed behind the walnut cabinetry, evoking nostalgic memories of secret childhood hideaways. The minimalist brushed brass hardware provides a subtle yet impactful accent, mirroring the timeless appeal of classic design while maintaining a contemporary edge.
The open-plan living space is ideal for entertaining, with the plush seating and fireplace conversation area adjacent to the buzzing kitchen. The olive-green sofa exudes cosy yet refined charm, while a striking abstract artwork above the fireplace injects dynamic contrast and modern energy. Rust-coloured armchairs and a raw, organic coffee table add a delightful counterbalance to the overall palette.
The master bedroom embodies a luxurious sophistication with an earthy, grounded sensibility. The stunning wooden panelling across the wall behind the bed lends a sense of warmth and natural beauty, while the terracotta-coloured accent wall and the harmonious bedding palette create a tranquil sanctuary.
