Chinese designers are having their moment in the spotlight, drawing on the country’s rich design heritage and differentiating themselves from the Western counterparts from whom their predecessors often copied.
Among this new breed, AD ARCHITECTURE presents a beautifully conceived example of thoroughly Chinese design as reinterpreted in the context of a modern-day minimalist vocabulary, in this home located in a high-end residential community in the coastal city of Shantou, Guangdong.
The design was led by the desire to create a an elegant space that purifies the mind,” hence the incorporation of spaces pervaded by purity and tranquility, and inspired by the pursuits of the traditional Chinese aristocrat-literati – from calligraphy to playing the guzheng zither instrument.

To achieve this, a material palette of technical veneer, tile, stone, and matt white paint was selected to realise this vision, complemented by traditionally inspired furniture pieces in dark woods and featuring slatted designs. Without unnecessary variations or complicated decoration, [we] respected the original atmosphere in the space and designed it in a minimalist style. The space features the balance between slackness and tension, which looks simple but fully manifests the client’s taste.
The overall layout of the space indicates the living habits and hobbies of the client. With white and light wooden colours setting the hue, the design integrated the client’s preference for bringing a cosy mood into the space.
A long wooden desk was placed where the client can practice calligraphy, which is the embodiment of Chinese cultural heritage.
The living room and dining room were designed in a concise and simple style, and were perfectly integrated together by applying the concept of blank living to the design.
Structures in the living room and dining room stretch the space and achieve harmony among each other, creating an elegant and comfortable living environment.
A bookcase stands at the hallway, with the client’s collections of books being orderly arranged.
It is said that people can meditate through reading, while the design of the hallway actually enables people to maintain inner peace.
The design of the bedroom is more of an expression of emotions, which presents a tranquil atmosphere that perfectly matches the hostess’ hobby of playing the traditional Chinese instrument guzheng.
The invisible beauty and purified feeling makes the bedroom a place to heal the mind and soul.
