This revamped apartment by Curitiba firm NK Arquitetura was designed to promote a sense of calm and serenity.
Known for its green landscaping, cultural attractions, and impressive architecture, the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba is known as the “green capital” of Brazil thanks to its gorgeous botanical gardens and sustainable urban planning. And this home was designed to harmonize the interiors with the views outdoors.
In the city’s Água Verde neighbourhood, architects Nicolle Nogueira and Katherine Heim Weber of Curitiba firm NK Arquitetura have completed the redesigned of this contemporary and stylish 2,045-square foot, three-bedroom apartment.
Their clients were a couple who wanted a home that would balance modernity with comfort, and that would convey a sense of tranquility and lightness. The clients requested a light colour scheme that promotes a sense of wellbeing. They also wanted the design to be dynamic and to include artistic elements.
To meet their brief, Nogueira and Heim Weber used light creams and greys, introduced carefully curated pieces of art, and incorporated an interesting mix of materials and textures to create a lively yet comfortable atmosphere.
“The clients' expectation was to have a turnkey project and, while they closely followed each stage of the work, they didn’t visit too frequently because they wanted to be surprised at the end, when everything was ready. The result exceeded their expectations, and they were very satisfied with our work,” says Nogueira.
The inspiration for the project initially came from the detailed requests in the clients’ brief, which highlighted the importance of creating an environment that would convey tranquility and lightness. The architects also added art and details in black to create a feeling of grandeur and sophistication that would provide some contrast to the serene atmosphere. “This harmonious combination of elements resulted in a unique and welcoming environment,” says Nogueira.
The architects reconfigured the original floor plan and removed some interior walls to create wider and more fluid functional spaces. They updated the unit’s electrical and hydraulic systems, which enabled a more efficient distribution of lighting outlets and sockets.
By demolishing some of the interior walls, they could create an open plan living and kitchen area. “The decision to remove the walls created a feeling of unity and connection between the interiors and views outdoors, making coexistence more dynamic and pleasant. The integration provided greater circulation of light and air, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere throughout the apartment. This addressed aesthetics as well as functionality as it allowed for the unit to more flexibly adapt to the clients’ everyday needs,” says Heim Weber.
The scenic city views of the Água Verde neighbourhood played a crucial role in the design, so colours and materials were chosen to harmonise with the urban landscape. “The integration of outdoor scenery with the indoor living spaces ensures a cohesive and visually appealing environment that connects with its surroundings,” says Nogueira.
The apartment includes living and dining areas integrated to create a spacious and open environment. In this areas, neutral tones with accents of colour maintain a light and airy feel. Extending from the living space is a balcony that looks out to views of the city. The apartment also includes a modern, functional kitchen, a small but well-organised pantry, laundry room, guest bathroom, and three bedrooms.
The master suite features an ensuite bathroom and is designed as a peaceful oasis. The other two bedrooms share a bathroom located in the corridor.
Some of the signature pieces used in this project include a dining and side table from Estúdio Latino de Design. These pieces were chosen for their unique craftsmanship and ability to blend seamlessly with the overall design. The home also features artwork from various Brazilian artists. “The selection of these pieces was driven by a desire to infuse the apartment with vibrant yet elegant elements that reflect both style and personality, and also add local character to the space,” says Heim Weber.
“The most unique characteristics of this project include the use of light colours to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The harmonious mix of textures and materials adds depth and interest to the design. Special attention was given to the selection of furnishings and decorative elements to enhance the overall aesthetic. The theme of this project is centered around creating a calm and tranquil atmosphere, and the light colors and natural materials helps accomplish this, creating a home that is perfect for relaxing and unwinding,” says Nogueira.
