Dubbed the "Boundless Residence," this tranquil dwelling by c.dd is a delicate extension to its nearby nature.
Antoni Gaudí once said: “There are no straight lines or sharp corners in nature. The straight line belongs to men, the curved line belongs to God.” This philosophy is beautifully captured in a recent project by the Chinese interior design studio c.dd — a peaceful lakeside residence in Foshan designed to reconnect with nature.
Nestled in Foshan City, Guangdong, this home is part of a residential building by the Green Island Lake – a lush 100-hectare garden home to camphor, maple, and banyan trees. At the heart of the lake is a "heart-shaped island" that's a haven for rare herons. Inspired by this natural wonder, the home revolves around the theme of boundless that meant to bring the indoors closer to nature.
At the core of its boundary-pushing design, the 3,013-square-foot apartment features an open-plan layout that encourages easy movement and family interaction. Spaces flow effortlessly from the entrance to the living areas, study, dining, and kitchen. The entrance makes a statement with a striking steel-clad wall and glass door, and a circular window offers a peek into the zen-filled study beyond.
"The space is envisioned as a bridge that connects individuals with family warmth, fosters harmony among groups, and resonates with contemporary emotions," says He Xiaoping and Li Xinglin, lead designers at c.dd. "By addressing both physical comfort and spiritual solace, it becomes an organic extension of the residents' lifestyle, with functionality tailored to user needs."
With this in mind, soft curves are a theme throughout the public zone, from the curved glass entrance door and drop ceilings to the TV wall that separates the living and study spaces. Hidden lights are scattered throughout the curved ceilings for additional warm and depth. The colour scheme is kept minimal and neutral, with blue and yellow accents adding vibrancy, and light wood veneer maintaining a natural touch.
In the dining room, large windows invite plenty of natural light, complemented by a cosy high-table coffee nook for some me-time.
The private area includes two en-suites for the couple's son and daughter, as well as a master suite with a walk-in wardrobe. In the master bedroom, a bespoke table in calming wood tones takes pride of place against soft hues and warm materials.
"The concept of boundlessness embraces the exploration and contemplation of infinity, encompassing limitless extension, creativity, and possibilities," they conclude. "With a perspective unanchored by convention, the design transcends existing frameworks and a fixed mindset, inviting residents to contemplate, explore, create, and enjoy in a state of openness and freedom."
