A duplex penthouse renovation in Praia Brava blends luxury, functionality, and the natural beauty of its coastal surroundings.

Situated on the picturesque shores of Praia Brava in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, this 760m² duplex penthouse has been transformed into a luxurious sanctuary by the renowned architect Simara Mello. Designed for a couple with two young daughters, the residence is now an inviting, private oasis that harmoniously integrates expansive, informal spaces with the stunning coastal landscape.

The renovation commenced with a strategic modification to the original layout. The construction company handed over the keys with an imposing staircase that bisected the main room. This not only failed to meet the clients' aesthetic preferences but also consumed valuable upper-floor space, hindering the distribution of the gourmet kitchen. Mello ingeniously relocated the staircase to a discreet corner, thus maximizing usable space and clearly delineating the private lower floor from the leisure-centric upper floor.

On the lower floor, the main family kitchen is a masterpiece of design, featuring natural wood sliding doors that seamlessly integrate with the dining and living areas as needed. A matte stone table from Estudio Bola provides a central gathering point for meals and meetings. The area is further enhanced by the Mucuripe desk by designer Camarotti, crafted from solid washed Jequitibá Rosa wood. This versatile piece functions as both a workspace and a bar sideboard, offering a panoramic view of the sea.

This floor also houses the TV room and bedrooms. An innovative redesign of the old closet created a multipurpose room, serving as both a wardrobe and guest room. The space includes a custom-designed sofa bed by Mello, featuring a wooden frame for lamps and a double mattress in raw canvas, a piece that received accolades in the Núcleo Catarinense de Decoração product design competition.

The upper floor is dedicated to relaxation and entertaining, boasting a gourmet kitchen, spacious balcony, and swimming pool. Here, the striking integration of indoor and outdoor spaces is accentuated by minimalist Brazilian-designed furniture, including wooden pieces, durable fabric sofas, and natural fiber rugs. The cohesive colour palette and natural decor create a fluid, airy environment that perfectly frames the breathtaking sea view.

The gourmet area stands out with its white lacquer cabinets, built-in appliances, and a basalt stone countertop that visually extends through large windows, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas.
