Italian cities are awash with picture perfect palazzo style architecture, and Turin is no exception. Step inside this ornate riverside residence, however, and you’ll be in for quite a surprise. Within a decidedly classical shell, multi-disciplinary design studio deamicisarchitetti has created a breathtakingly modern apartment by enhancing the existing architectural structure and paring it back, allowing the space and selected surface materials to speak for themselves.

Renovations were informed by the apartment’s waterfront views on one side, as well as by the envious amounts of natural light afforded by floor-to-ceiling arch windows. Where the previous iteration felt dark and a little dreary, deamicisarchitetti made certain to open the area up further still with illuminations by Catellani & Smith. Period features such as cornicing and vaulted ceilings have been retained, drawing the eyes upward and extending the space, at the same time endowing it with a certain charm and paying homage to its structural heritage.

Nonetheless, the overall aesthetic is unflinchingly contemporary and minimal with walls of brilliant white, clean lines and precious materials such as marble and heat-treated oak flooring all working to elevate the interiors to the apex of understated but effortless elegance.
