This colourful project marks the third bespoke home designed by Tomèf for Molinari. With a global reach, the London-based architectural and design firm led by Italian architect and designer Tommaso Franchi has established itself as a prominent player in the industry.
Its distinctive design approach seamlessly blends international influences with a discernible Italian flair, resulting in a refined aesthetic. This artistic direction perfectly resonates with Molinari's vision of infusing his Los Angeles home with elements that pay tribute to his Italian cultural heritage.
Being the sole Italian champion of the British Open golf championship thus far, it's unsurprising that Molinari chose a residence nestled in lush surroundings, conveniently situated just a short 10-minute drive away from three renowned golf courses.
For Molinari and his wife, Valentina, there are few things more important than crafting a comfortable and relaxing haven. Despite the challenges posed by the design process taking place over the pandemic, which necessitated remote communication, Franchi had already developed a deep understanding of their preferences through their years of collaboration.
Franchi said: "The success of any interior design project hinges on the relationship between the designer and the client. Our harmonious rapport with the Molinari family is beautifully exemplified by this expansive residence, expertly crafted through remote design amidst the pandemic. Our deep understanding of their lifestyle, coupled with design concepts that align seamlessly with their tastes and preferences, has resulted in a remarkable testament to our amicable association. The entire process of exterior decoration unfolded effortlessly and flawlessly.”
Within the house, you’ll find an array of products from famous Italian brands and designers such as furniture from Cassina and Foscarini, wallpapers from C&C Milano, and armchairs by the esteemed designer Gio Ponti. These Italian creations are juxtaposed with carefully sourced exquisite pieces from around the world, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere. Moreover, Franchi sought to reflect local elements of Los Angeles in the home, with vibrant living spaces that echo the city's evergreen scenery throughout the seasons.
Franchi drew inspiration from the surrounding lush evergreen foliage, blending neutral earth tones, rich greens and shades of azure to create a captivating colour scheme that brings the outdoors into the interior space. The living room showcases palm leaf-patterned wallpaper sourced from CW Stockwell, evoking reminiscent vibes of the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Glossy, dark green Benjamin Moore paint extends from the walls to the adjoining study, creating a cohesive look.
The space has been complemented by a Noguchi Isamu washi floor lamp; a Rose Uniacke walnut coffee table; Pierre Frey green fabric cushions designed by India Mahdavi; and a custom off-white sofa by Tomèf. Together, these carefully curated pieces converge to create a serene and comforting ambiance, reminiscent of nature.
The dining room showcases a custom-made oversized glass and silver dining table by Tomèf, subtly paying homage to vintage Cadillacs and continuing the theme of Los Angeles charm.
The designer has emphasised the homeowner's personal story through intricate spatial details. Within the open-plan kitchen, a massive Ingo Maurer pendant light adorned with playful love quotes in different languages takes centre stage.
The kitchen also incorporates the homeowner's personal mementos, including rainbow artwork by Molinari's young daughter. On the staircase, you'll find nostalgic posters of the vermouth manufacturer from Molinari's hometown of Turin.
The entire house is filled with vibrant colours and patterns. The master bedroom is dominated in blue tones with blue-coloured artworks by Marco Lorenzetto and Tom Borgese adorning the walls, complementing the blue velvet sofa from L'Opificio. They blend seamlessly with the blue coffee table and patterned curtains designed by Paola Navone in the living room.
The harmony continues outdoors with a captivating blue outdoor sofa and a bespoke dining table and benches by Tomèf, crafted from Sicilian azure volcanic rock.
The formerly monotoned, colourless mansion, now reflects the local essence of Los Angeles and the Italian heritage of its owners through incorporating blue and green hues and the strategic placement of decorative elements. The designer has found immense inspiration in the cultural aspects of both locations, which have served as a rich source of ideas and a visual vocabulary to explore.
"Drawing from the couple's Italian roots and the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles, we have been blessed with an abundance of inspiration. Our team enjoys employing interior design techniques to showcase California's outdoor lifestyle, which has resulted in a stunning and unique family home," Franchi said.
