Brimming with character and masterful mix of textures, this 939-sq.ft. bachelor’s pad in Pok Fu Lam belongs to a proud first-time homeowner.
Creating a completely black and white flat has always been a dream for designer YC Chen, founder of hoo. So when he came across a client whose favourite colour is black, it was serendipity.
The homeowner is a young bachelor in his 30s who had just purchased his first home, a two-bedroom flat in Pok Fu Lam. He lives a simple life and doesn’t have a lot of personal belongings, so the goal was to keep his space simple and sleek.
Using a monochromatic theme to create a home that’s still brimming with character was no easy task. “When you can only have two colours to choose from, it’s a challenge to make sure the flat doesn’t feel repetitive or boring,” said Chen. “I used loose furniture to spice up the space.” Inspired by the Bauhaus style of pared-back spaces decorated with geometric shapes, he incorporated a mix of organic and tubular shapes when furnishing the flat.
In the living room, the off-white upholstered sofa is livened up by a black and white throw pillow. A white plaster sculpture adds texture to the wall behind the sofa, while the black-tiled floor is covered with a black-and-white geometric print rug.
On the opposite side, the dining area and kitchen is sectioned off from the living room with a different flooring, black-and-white marble tiles. A circular dining table with a lined cylindrical base and artificial leather chairs sit in the corner of the room. A ball-like light hangs directly above the table, reflected through the organic shaped mirror on the wall.
“The kitchen and dining room tiles are my favourite details about the flat,” said Chen. “I actually use the same tiles in parts of the bathroom and master bedroom too.”
Chen spiced up the black-and-white palette of the master bedroom with thin strips of black-painted timber that form a grid pattern on the walls, and more geometric print throw pillows on the white linen bed. The en suite bathroom pulls out all the stops, black-and-white marble tiles surround a luxurious bathing tub, separated with a glass partition.
The guest bathroom receives a more minimalist treatment. The walls and vanity basin are lined with small, square white porcelain tiles, with a simple frameless mirror adhered to the wall above the sink.
The overall result of the project is classy, but definitely not boring, with a bit of a ’80s retro look as a nod to the era the homeowner was born in.
