Solon Islandus isn’t your every day Hong Kong home. It’s a live-aboard trawler yacht that, for over five years, has been the home of midwife Hulda and her family. The family originally had a traditional apartment in Hong Kong and used the boat on weekend, but Hulda felt they weren’t getting enough use out of it. I told my husband: either we cruise around the world or we live on it, she says.
Hulda’s father who is a carpenter came to Hong Kong from Iceland to oversee the project. He also finalised the interiors in a caramel-coloured oak finish. Local carpenters executed a lot of the work in Hong Kong and the result is a heavy-build, 21 metre seaworthy vessel featuring five bedroom and three bathrooms, equipped to cruise around the world at a top speed of 12 knots.

Hulda readily admits that decorating a space such as this can be quite the challenge. You have to be careful with decorations, as things tend to come crashing down when a wave washes over, she says. My solution is keeping few, but functional things around. Playing around with colours and introducing objects that aren’t a boat item, like a nice lounge chair, makes it more homey.
