Situated in India’s entertainment capital Mumbai, this 4,500 square foot residence combines the old-world grandeur of Jaipur and timeless sophistication.
Distinctive arches, reminiscent of the colonnades of Jaipur palaces, line the living room walls, opening up to a balcony that offers panoramic views of the Maharashtra capital and the Arabian sea.
Mumbai’s vibrant cultural scene figures prominently in the apartment decor. A golden parametric statue inspired by Michelangelo’s David stands on one side of the living room, while local artist Kisalay Vora’s artwork from his 2020 collection on Brahmand hangs on the other.
This stylish flat belongs to a Jaipur family that has since spread to different corners of the world. Since Mumbai is the middle ground for the family and their relatives, they wanted a comfortable place in the city for family reunions.
The warm colour palette and curved furniture creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere in the living room. The space is anchored by two large beige sofas, juxtaposed with a feather-printed lounger on textured rugs from Jaipur. A stack of chests in the form of leather travel valises by Magus Designs acts as a side table – a nod to the owners’ international backgrounds.
Interior designer Annkur Khosla’s goal was to “create a space for family get-togethers where they feel a connection to their roots”.
The dining room continues with the warm motif. A coconut tree-like installation by Klove Design Studio, with metal and cane leaves, branches out from the ceiling. Underneath, a pale beige dining table is paired with green upholstered chairs with gold-plated legs. Champagne fluted glass shutters and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry creates a clean and uncluttered storage space.
The bedrooms follow the same design as the rest of the house. Special consideration has been given to the integration of natural light, colour and texture. The master bedroom and guest room offers floor-to-ceiling windows with neutral drapes to create a relaxing oasis. Bespoke wallpapers and subtle shades of teal add character and a pop of colour to the rooms.
An amalgamation of a rich heritage with a modern context forms the design narrative for this home.
“We tried to incorporate an Indian modern design ethos within the space to create a connection between the rich heritage of cities like Jaipur and complement it with modern design sensibilities,” Khosla says.
