This Australian bungalow in Fitzroy North is meant to fold - and unfold - just like the Chatterbox game.
Located in Fitzroy North, Australia, what was once a rundown bungalow has been transformed into a functional, well-lit home that takes cues from the nostalgic paper-folding game.

Designed by Studio Esar, the home's folding layout creates distinct zones while breaking up the building's mass. Different sections face various directions, maximizing natural light throughout the property. Multiple internal courtyards function as light wells and ventilation sources, adding greenery while creating usable outdoor spaces within the urban footprint.
The design preserves elements of the original bungalow's character while improving functionality for a family of four. Internal courtyards serve dual purposes - bringing in natural light and air while creating quiet outdoor retreats with plantings and decorative elements.

Materials include oak finishes, walnut accents, and lime-washed timbers, providing a neutral backdrop for the owners' art collection and plants. The living room features a practical colour scheme with a lavender rug paired with a green sofa. The pool room incorporates built-in seating with colourful cushions, designed to accommodate the needs of teenage children.

Durability informed material choices, with easy-care options like bouclé-textured outdoor rugs ensuring the spaces remain practical while maintaining visual appeal.
"The client aspired for the project to be highly sustainable by using as many recycled and sustainably sourced materials as possible," said Silvia Roldan, Principal Designer of Studio Esar.
"With a love of plants and an extensive and diverse art collection, we have curated a collection of pieces and a palette of colours and textures that complements not competes," Roldan added.
