With its impressive layout and scale, this 8,855 square feet abode in Scarsdale, New York needed only light touch-ups to truly shine.
They say a little lipstick can make all the difference, and this elegant Scarsdale villa is a case in point. With its expansive 8,855 square feet, tall windows, and 10-foot ceilings, the home needed only a few thoughtful touches to reveal its true potential.
“It was very dated and bland but had amazing bones,” recalls Tami Wassong, of Tami Wassong Interiors. “The homeowners, a young couple with three boys, initially thought a full gut renovation was necessary. However, we achieved their vision through minor structural changes, creative layouts, and custom millwork.”
The original moldings were preserved, but doors and hardware received much-needed upgrades. The dated floor tiles are replaced by new white oak, artfully stained to match the existing floors. The kitchen was revitalized with refinished cabinets, contrasting black steel doors, and an oak island—all complemented by a striking marble backsplash.
A clever bar area was added, seamlessly connecting the kitchen and entertaining spaces. The primary bathroom and closet were reimagined into an open, flowing area, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
The result is a sleek, versatile seven-bedroom home with no lack of refinement. Wassong’s color palette was inspired by a textile collaboration between Black Crow Studios and Bleu Cobalt, discovered on a sourcing adventure in France. “We chose where to be bold with color and where to keep it calming and neutral,” she explains.
The living room, affectionately dubbed “the music room” by the homeowners, features deep olive walls and ceilings, custom black-and-gold wool rugs, and paprika lounge chairs. This space, filled with art and music books, is a family favorite.
In the primary bathroom, modernity meets timelessness with cleverly configured marble tiles, natural oak cabinets, and white dolomite marble walls. Each child’s room reflects their individual tastes, yet shares a common thread of carpeting in varied tones.
Rich materials such as white oak, walnut, leather, Calacatta marble, and blackened steel impart a tactile richness throughout the home.
“No room was off limits to the children,” Wassong notes. “We designed spaces where the family could relax and live without fear of spills.”
