For designers Jason Yung and Caroline Ma, founders of the well-regarded Hong Kong-based practice Jason Caroline Design, every new residential project requires a fresh eye. The firm’s ethos is to create spaces that tell the owners’ story, capture their personal style as well as showcase their precious belongings. Designing a home is like creating a backdrop for a particular character in a movie – everything starts from the character,” stresses Jason. The design is generated from the user, from how they dress to what they eat and where they go. Thus, we would describe ourselves as couture designers for the home. Every detail is custom-made for the owner.”
The design duo’s most recent residential project is a stunning five-storey home on Shouson Peak in Deep Water Bay, notable not only for its size but also for the calibre of art and decor pieces housed within. The light-filled home features a mix of eclectic wall textures, custom-made furniture, and a vast collection of art and antiques. This particular project marks their third time working with the home’s Korean owners, and Jason notes that they’ve since amassed plenty of designer furniture, accessories, books and a massive collection of art from their first project together. The home has everything they love and want to live with. It’s like a hip, private shop for the owners – it reminds me of the high-end lifestyle shop Colette in Paris,” shares Jason.
The home has five stories in total, starting with a garage and entrance foyer, followed by a walk-in wine cellar one floor up. The sleek kitchen on the ground floor is bright, courtesy of floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space in abundant natural light. On the same floor is a spacious living room, featuring beautiful custom-made furniture, prized artworks, and a connecting outdoor terrace with a garden and pool; the latter helps infuse a natural feel to the streamlined, urban interiors. We created a pocket Zen garden with a water fountain beside the swimming pool so the space is permeated with the soothing sound of running water,” shares Jason.
