It’s like the lofty Mount Tai is standing in front of me, it’s like the endless river is flowing in front of me.”

So goes two lines from ‘Gao Shan Liu Shui,’ an ancient Chinese melody from the Spring and Autumn period over 2,500 years ago. Representative of harmony between the elements of nature, the melody has acquired new meaning in the modern day by serving as inspiration for the President’s Mansion residential suites in the super-tall Wuhan Greenland Centre skyscraper in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

Designed by Hong Kong-based Cheng Chung Design (CCD), this show flat builds upon its abundance of natural light with open-plan living spaces. In the eyes of designers, the changes of space and atmosphere are the most attractive parts in traditional Chinese space,” elaborates CCD founder, Joe Cheng. Therefore, the space sequence created by design alternates between natural light and artificial light.”

To achieve this effect, transparency and proximity of materials to one another were manipulated so that, depending on the time and angle at which they enter the main living space, the effects of light would shift to create altogether new perspectives.
