After a celebrated career as a set decorator on international feature films, Oscar nominee Kerrie Brown founded her own design brand in Australia five years ago. Kerrie creates her wallcoverings, prints and soft furnishings by overlaying a combination of text, illustrations and colourful accents, resulting in ranges that ooze originality.

We sat down with Kerrie for some insight into her world.

What is a typical day for you like?

Being at the computer answering emails, then meeting with my team to make sure we are fulfilling orders. I’ll probably chat to my fabric and wallpaper printers – one’s Italian, the other’s German – who are key people in the quality chain. Later in the day, I meet with interior designers or chat with one of our retailers, many of whom I would now call my friends. Towards the end of the day, I work on Instagram and Facebook.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Any chance I get I play around with ideas on my computer. Also coming up with new designs for clients, whether for boutique hotels, restaurants or residences. Even on the weekends if I have a spare minute I find myself behind the computer. That’s why I have to leave my computer behind if I want a break. It’s also incredibly exciting when samples for new designs come back from the printer. It’s like a continual Christmas!

And the most challenging?

Trying to juggle all the hats you have to wear when running a business – particularly as it is expanding at a rapid pace. I have to be careful not to let the business side overrun the creative! I can’t believe that we will be five years old this month.

Do you have a mentor or other designers you admire?

I don’t have a mentor, but I admire so many designers – I particularly love anything Patricia Urquiola does, as well as Viktor & Rolf, John Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Pierre Frey, Marcel Wanders… I could go on forever!

If you weren’t a textile designer, what would you be?

Well I’ve been a fashion designer and a set decorator so I guess it would be something to do with design and fabric.

What’s next for Kerrie Brown? Any dream locations you would like to be present in or particular jobs you want to take on?

Lots of new opportunities have opened up since exhibiting our 2017 range of wallpaper and fabric designs at Maison et Objet in Paris. While there, we met up with friends and many new clients, which could see me travelling to Chile, Germany, Belgium, North America and London to explore collaborations and design opportunities. I love being involved with designers working on restaurants, bars, residences and boutique hotels. I’d love to do a large boat or launch in Hong Kong or Miami.
