Over the last quarter of a century, Design House Stockholm has done it all, from furniture and lighting to fashion accessories and fabrics, often with a refreshingly inventive slant. You’ll be hard pressed to resist a second glance upon encountering a Design House Stockholm piece, whether the Cord lamp by Form Us With Love, which appears to defy gravity as it hangs in mid-air, or the famous Knot pillow by Ragnheiður Osp Sigurðardóttir that – as its name suggests – looks like an oversized knot.
In the company’s modern Stockholm office overlooking the city’s beautiful bay, we sat down with founder and CEO Anders Färdig to ask him how Design House Stockholm plans to continue keeping design lovers on their toes.

What are the elements that determine Design House Stockholm’s success?
I would say our approach to design. We never ask to a designer to create something for us, we prefer to wait for them to create something. Creativity has to be free and has to born spontaneously. We think that this is the only way you can see projects without constraints or limits.
So how do you usually choose a project?
Each new project must have something special, something that lets it to go beyond the ordinary limits. The Block Lamp by designer Harri Koskinen features a glass shell that looks like an ice block that traps the light bulb. We sold the Alba vase by designer Anna Kraitz all over the world. It’s a classic piece of porcelain, but wrapped with a leather belt that makes it look different and unique.

How would you describe Design House Stockholm’s style?
We are Swedes, and we like that our collections reflect our Scandinavian style: beautiful objects with simple shapes that are versatile and practical.
What are some of your new projects coming up?
We want to create new collections focused on nature; items that let you have a small green corner in your home. For example, our greenhouse project and new small vases for single stems or single flowers. Next on our agenda is Salone del Mobile at Milan Design Week. See you there!
