How did you start collaborating with BoConcept?
I met them 8 or 9 years ago while we were exhibiting at a Cologne fair. We started talking about one of my products. I have been working with them ever since then.
Could you tell us about your design process?
I ask myself all the questions that will come up in the process – not necessarily at the beginning, but during the process. If I don’t know how to produce a product, it won’t be able to manufacture. Are the users are going to enjoy it? I also love trying out ideas and materials. Once I have an idea to work with, then I will narrow down to a few products.
What kinds of materials are you particularly interested in working with?
I love natural materials like fibre, wool, cotton and wood. I personally dislike synthetic materials, but I think plastic is fantastic – as long as you can use it honestly instead of pretending that it’s something else.
Does your previous experience with fashion design influence what you do now?
To me, when you are designing, you are basically using the same tools – the same how-to skills and knowledge – no matter what you are designing, be it a chair or a parking lot. It’s a matter of how you choose to express your creativity.
What is your personal style?
I don’t like gold, jewellery or any ornamentation. My style isn’t necessarily Scandinavian – it’s more of the mindset of keeping everything as simple as possible. After all, if you are working with a lot of decoration or a specific style, you will only be able to hit a narrow target. But with simple and functional-oriented designs, you are able to reach out to a bigger group of clients.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I have no idea where my inspirations come from! I know it’s a weird thing to say. I’m actually not very creative, but there’s someone very creative living inside of me. Whenever I need ideas, that person keeps throwing inspiration at me. I’m interested in so many different details and materials that I see every day. I subconsciously store ideas. When I need any, I can just use any one of those. It’s not a very organized process. It’s much more chaotic.
Do you have any advice you’d like to share with our readers?
The trendier you are, the faster you go out of fashion. Go back to the simplicity and the essence of design.
