Known as one of France’s most prestigious decorators, Jean-Louis Deniot has recently collaborated with Baker to design a collection of furniture and accessories. The collection can be summed up in three words – chic, easy, magic.
Classic Yet Contemporary
Deniot’s goal was to create a collection that is both informal and bold, and conceived to fit seamlessly into both modern and more traditional interiors. I was influenced by vintage furnishings from the 20th century and by the sense of presence in grand, aristocratic decor, he says. Yet, I also want my designs to have a relaxed side and an elegance that makes them feel timeless.
Inspired by Nature
One of his favourite items is the spoon-shaped Iolite table lamp with its alabaster heart. It almost reminds me of a peacock feather”, Deniot says. He emphasises that there was particular importance placed on creating exquisite proportions and balance in each piece – some are inherently sculptural, with their geometric shapes and curved silhouettes, while others have links to nature. I wanted timeless graphics based on honeycomb, origami, structural natural stone patterns, he says, nature creates the most amazing aesthetic, which are above any trend. So, I thought it was a good angle to find inspiration for timeless patterns”.
A Dedication to Craft
Deniot was particularly drawn to Baker due to the company’s long-standing commitment to craftsmanship. Indeed, Baker represents quality, longevity, and all products are 100% manmade by the best artisans. The lighting and mirrors, for instance, are handcrafted throughout Italy by small, family-run craft shops, using age-old techniques.
Beautiful Bespoke
For this collection, a large selection of finishes is offered, allowing buyers to personalise their purchases and adapt them to their existing interiors. They can both enhance a soft or lush ambience and infuse a space with personality. The pieces are like chameleons”, notes Deniot. They really blend in or stand out depending on the finishes clients choose. Therefore, every person has the opportunity to create an aesthetic that perfectly suits their preferences and environment”.
Insatiable Wanderlust
Deniot asserts his biggest source of inspiration is travel. I am a citizen of the world in that I really embrace and love all cultures and countries I am exposed to. The collection is a reflection of that and contains nods to the aesthetics of various different cities. Some pieces have a hint of Vienna, others of Los Angeles. The iron-eye console table reminds him of New York during the 1970s and ‘80s, the agate table is reminiscent of the misty views over the water and mountains in Hong Kong, while the citrine coffee table would fit perfectly at home in Miami. Yet, the overall sensibility is very much grounded in Deniot’s native France. French style is all about the right composition, balance and tuning”, he declares. As well as a simultaneous sense of grandeur with sophisticated simplicity”.
