We don’t try to be controversial. If we like it, we think other people may like it, too, says Marlene Taschen, Director of Business Development of TASCHEN, discussing the company’s unconventional approach that sets it apart from the typical, commercially-minded publisher. Known for eschewing market research and for pursuing provocative topics, TASCHEN is adamant about treating every project with equal consideration and respect, resulting in a vast repertoire of books on different topics, ranging from US$10 to US$10,000 in price.
Recently in town for an intimate event at the Upper House, Marlene spoke about the resilience of print products, especially the beautifully bound tomes that the brand specalises in. From Naomi Campbell Art Edition – a surprising best seller at the London store – to the brand new Issey Miyake monograph, which comes with an original Miyake-designed book bag, there is no denying that these pieces can easily find pride of place on your shelf, coffee table, or even your wall.

The brand’s timely arrival in Hong Kong – it launched a pop-up store at the Upper House as Art Week kicked off – speaks of the stature of the publisher in the creative world. The books are passion projects and printed works of art, free for us to peruse whenever we please. And if you think their books are drool-worthy, wait until you see their Milan store, which opened in 2015. Here’s hoping that a permanent standalone store is also in the cards for Hong Kong to inspire the city’s design and book lovers.
The TASCHEN Pop-up store is open from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Upper House until April 31st. Exclusive room offers are also available. Books are also for sale at Kelly & Walsh.
