There is a common belief that the books a person chooses to read can offer a glimpse into their character. In a similar vein, the design and layout of a space can reveal not only the inhabitants but also the creative sensibilities and personal traits of the architect or interior designer behind it.
During our exploration of what inspires the leading interior designers in Hong Kong for our Top 50 issue, one book emerged as a prominent favourite among them: "The Architecture of Happiness" by Alain de Botton.
The Architecture of Happiness is a book by Alain de Botton which discusses the importance of beauty, published by Pantheon Books in 2006. De Botton, inspired by Stendhal's motto "beauty is the promise of happiness", analyses human surroundings and how human needs and desires manifest their ideals in architecture.
Notably, "The Architecture of Happiness" has garnered praise and admiration from architects and critics alike. Jay Leung and Maggie Mo of Starz Pasha revealed that this insightful book has profoundly influenced their design philosophy. "This book explores the connection between our surroundings and our well-being, highlighting the importance of thoughtful design in creating spaces that enhance our lives," they said. "It has influenced my approach to design by emphasising the emotional and psychological impact of our surroundings."
Kevin Kung from Epic Interior Design echoed this sentiment, stressing the book's examination of how architecture and design intertwine with our emotions and happiness. Undoubtedly, "The Architecture of Happiness" has become a cherished resource for interior designers, offering invaluable insights into the intricate relationship between spaces and the individuals who inhabit them.
